It seems recently, that Tottenham are being linked with a host of world football’s most sought after youngsters. The latest player to claim that Spurs have made an offer, is Brazilian starlet Leandro Damiao.
According to the Daily Mirror, Damiao told Telefoot that, although there is interest from Paris Saint Germain, only Spurs have made a formal offer.
“I am not aware of anything for an offer from PSG, I have had no contact with them or [sporting director] Leonardo.
“All I know is that Tottenham have made an offer.
“For now, I think about my club and the Copa Libertadores. In July, if a proposal comes, it will be discussed.”
Damaio has been scouted by Tottenham in the past, and has also been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal. So why is exactly is he so in demand, and why should Spurs make sure they sign him?
Well, firstly, it seems that the 22-year-old is perfectly suited to the Premier League, although at 6″2, he isn’t your typical target man. Damiao has an array of tricks and flicks that he isn’t afraid to showcase, alongside an unerring finish. However, this doesn’t mean that he is afraid to use his size and strength. Damiao is extremely impressive in the air and has a surprisingly quick turn of pace.
The striker has an impressive 52 goals in 86 games for Internacional, and one goal in his four appearances for Brazil. His eye for goal and clever movement in and around the box, have marked him out as a potential Premier League star, and Spurs aren’t the only ones to notice this.
This moves us on to the second reason why Spurs should sign Damiao – if they don’t, someone else will. Arsenal and Liverpool have been credited with an interest in the Brazilian striker in the past, and scouts from Spain, Italy and France have all been spotted in Brazil over the past six months.
PSG are one of the favourites to sign Damiao, with the connection of Brazil legend Leonardo as the French club’s sporting director, and the fact that Ronaldinho prospered there so brilliantly around the turn of the century.
However, the strong interest from the Premier League may prove to be Spurs’ biggest threat. Liverpool are short of a goal-scorer at the moment, and despite Luis Suarez returning to the team with two goals in two starts, Kenny Dalglish must know the absence of a true goal-scorer is costing Liverpool in the race for fourth. Arsenal too, will probably need either support or a replacement for Robin Van Persie at the end of the season.
The third key reason that Spurs should sign Internacional’s key striker, is that they will lose their own at the end of the season. Emmanuel Adebayor will go back to Manchester City at the end of the season, having played a massive part in helping Spurs secure a Champions League qualification place.
Spurs may look into keeping Adebayor permanently, but City are likely to want to recoup most of the £25million the paid for him, and then there are his enormous £180,000 a week wages. Damiao will represent a much cheaper investment, with the possibility of re-sale should the Brazilian realise his potential and become a Premier League hit.
I think Damiao will prove to be a top striker in European football. He has all the tools, and a fighting spirit which has proved itself various times throughout his career. It took many trials and many hours on a motorway for Damiao to prove that he belonged amongst Brazil’s elite players. Now, after a somewhat late development, the 22-year-old is ready to move to a European giant, and once again prove just how good he is.
