The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have really grown to love David Luiz this year…
Though always a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian always had a mistake in him, often struggling at points in the Premier League, leading both the British press and, indeed, Premier League supporters to criticise the defender.
That opinion has certainly been forgotten now, though, with Luiz undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s best defenders this season, forming an excellent partnership with Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill over the last few months.
That being said, and with hindsight, there is no doubting that David Luiz’s return to Chelsea was a big risk, but it was that risk, he says, that really motivated him to move back to the Premier League. Speaking to the Guardian, Luiz has revealed one of the main reasons as to why he came back to the club: “They [the British supporters and press] always criticised me a lot even after winning the Champions League, the Europa League… That’s why it was a risk. And I love the risk….so I [chose to] taste something new”.
Indeed it seems like it was a mix of a love for the club, a desire to refute the criticisms of his own play and the need to take a risk in life that really motivated Luiz to make the move back to Stamford Bridge – and now, his decision has certainly been vindicated.
Playing in the middle of a three-man defence, Luiz has become the focal point of the Blues’ back line. Having not made a single, notable mistake for Chelsea, it appears as though Luiz has really put his bad form behind him, and that makes his decision to move back to England even greater.
Indeed, our landlord thinks that most fans have forgotten about his mistakes, with the punters in the pub only ever praising the Brazilian for his fine form.
