After recent reports that they are after Cheick Tiote and Tim Krul, it seems that Chelsea are interested in signing yet another Newcastle player, Demba Ba.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants Ba to replace ageing striker Didier Drogba, who looks set for a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer, when his contract ends.
The Blues are also looking at Napoli front-man Edison Cavani and Porto’s Hulk, but Ba would represent a much cheaper alternative, who has already proven himself in the Premier League.
There is the issue of the Senegalese international’s knee, which was famously described as a “ticking-time bomb” by Stoke manager Tony Pulis, right before Ba went to Newcastle and scored 16 goals this season (so far).
I’m sure there will be a lot of clubs sniffing around Demba Ba this summer. He combines pace and power with a subtle intelligence that allows him to link the play, as well as score plenty himself. As I said in a previous article, it is all well and good Chelsea being linked with good younger players that will refresh them, but they have no manager.
Who knows if Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola would want Demba Ba?
There is also the case of Ba’s so-called release clause. There was a lot of talk about how low he could be bought for in January and in the end the striker committed himself to Newcastle. It will be harder to do that this summer though, when really big clubs will be sniffing around and whatever his release clause might be, I’m sure Chelsea can afford it.
