The Italian outfit bought the versatile Romanian defender in 2008 for £4.5million after a successful loan spell at the club. The 24-year-old joined Lazio from Dinamo Bucharest where he had been cited to be one the league’s brightest prospects.
The defender can play at both left-back and centre half and has nearly ten caps for his country. Chelsea have been scouting the player for a number of weeks but Barcelona and Juventus have also been linked with the player dubbed “The New Chivu”.
Manchester City had previously been interested in the player last summer, but more recent interest from Chelsea has forced the hand of Lazio, who are now looking to offer the Romanian a bumper deal.
Lazio are said to be keen on inserting a £17million release clause into any new contract to ensure he can’t leave on the cheap. But a huge rise in wages will be needed to force any such deal.
Radu is still yet to sign any renewed contract and Chelsea may want to strike now while they still can. A proposed summer move would be more likely, but to ensure they get their man, a January move may be necessary.
A fee of around £12million could be enough to secure the player’s services in the new year.
