Toon fans will be gutted, but goal.com have today revealed that Harry Redknapp is planning an audacious £15million swoop for Andy Carroll. It is understood that ‘Arry will also use out-of-favour David Bentley and Robbie Keane as make-weights in a deal to capture the England International’s signature.
The 21-year-old striker is seen as Spurs’ most attainable target in the January window due to Newcastle’s financial issues. Selling Carroll would almost certainly not be an option for Pardew in January, but the added bonus of Keane and Bentley could entice the former Hammers boss.
Newcastle are likely to hold out for a deal worth £20million as Carroll has only recently penned a new five-year contract with the Tyneside outfit.
Carroll is a boyhood Newcastle fan and may be unwilling to consider the move to London, however, a series of controversies off the pitch in Newcastle may see him leave the area in a bid to settle down and start fresh.
Tottenham may have stern competition from Manchester United and Chelsea, who have both been tracking the 21-year-old striker, but it is unlikely either would be able to offer anything other than cash to soften the blow.
Spurs are in the market for a new striker as Harry looks to pair a prolific striker with England ace, Jermaine Defoe. Fellow forward Peter Crouch has only hit 1 goal in the league all season and Russian Roman Pavlyuchenko hasn’t started as many games as he would expect.
A mystery source told Goal.com:
“Despite what Newcastle are saying, everyone in football thinks Andy Carroll will be sold if a decent offer comes in,”
“It’s also no secret that Harry Redknapp has started banging the drum to convince his chairman to sign him – he thinks Carroll could be a monster for Spurs.”
I believe it would be unlikely Newcastle would part with their star striker. The 6ft 3″ hotshot has banged in 10 goals in 17 appearances in the league this season and Newcastle’s league position of 8th is largely due to the big man up top.
Though, an offer big enough would certainly prey on the mind of owner Mike Ashley, and should it be accepted, mounting pressure on the striker may lead to a deal being penned.
Spurs would be able to field Carroll in the Champions League which will certainly be of interest to Harry Redknapp. Though, Tottenham have had no shortage of goals in Europe’s premier competition this season after a string of high scoring games.
Which ever way any deal goes, Carroll’s arrival at White Hart Lane would certainly be the writing on the wall for Robbie Keane. The Irish striker has been linked to a host of clubs, including Birmingham, Aston Villa, Wolves and Blackburn, but a move to the north-east would certainly interest the former Inter Milan forward. With Carroll’s departure, he would almost certainly be assured first team football and may recapture that form that once earned him a £19million move to Liverpool.
Perhaps this is one of the most unlikely moves come January, but it would almost certainly be one of the most intriguing should it happen.
