Arsenal fans are looking up with dismay here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Metro note that the club are falling further and further into problems.
After the opening day defeat to Aston Villa, it has become clear that the club have made major errors in the transfer market and after seeing Luis Suarez practically accept his fate as a Liverpool player, not to mention missing out on the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Stevan Jovetic, Wenger now has to face up to the wrath of fans.
The manager may have implored fans to be patient ahead of the window closing, but now supporters groups have demanded that his own contract extension talks be placed on hold and the club focus on what is important – bringing players in before the close of the window.
Not only do the club need a forward, but after seeing injuries to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and also seeing their rock at the back for much of last season, Laurent Koscielny sent off against Villa, Frenchman Wenger’s already thin squad is looking like crumbling – one game into the season.
In news that Wenger will find increasingly unsettling, the Arsenal Supporters Trust noted
‘In recent weeks Ivan Gazidis (chief executive) has spoken of the club’s intent to offer Arsene Wenger a new contract,
‘The AST believes this is inappropriate. For now the club’s entire focus must be on using the remaining days of the transfer window to strengthen the team significantly.
‘The fact that there is money available for squad-strengthening is not disputed. The AST’s independent analysis suggests that the amount is somewhere between £70m-£100m.’
