Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we can understand why Arsenal supporters are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of signings arriving at the Emirates Stadium despite reports linking them with a host of top European players.
Now today’s MirrorFootball suggests that Wenger must double his offer for Swansea City captain Ashley Williams to avoid missing out on yet another transfer target.
Wenger is chasing another centre-back ahead of the new season – which kicks off on Saturday – and has outlined the Welsh international skipper to offer depth in his squad.
However, the French boss is trying to land the former Stockport defender on the cheap with £6million offered so far, as Arsenal’s reluctance to spend continues to the annoyance of punters in the tavern.
Swansea are desperate to keep their main defender at the club with the season just days away, but he could be available at £12million if the Gunners are to up their bid.
The 28-year-old defender has been an impressive member of the Swansea side that secured a top-half Premier League finish and claimed a memorable Capital One Cup victory last term under the leadership of Michael Laudrup.
Now the South Wales outfit are considering telling the Gunners that Williams will not be sold this summer unless Wenger can submit a realistic bid which, given his prudent attitude this summer, looks unlikely. Just yesterday we reported that Bayern Munich Luis Gustavo was set to join Wolfsburg despite strong interest from the Emirates.
Will Arsenal pay the cost for Williams or will another target slip through the net? Let us know your thoughts.
