Arsenal have had some incredible midfielders over the years. From Freddie Ljungberg, to Cesc Fabregas to even Jack Wilshere, some talented players have graced the pitch in North London.
However, arguably the most impressive duo that has been seen at the Emirates linked up Patrick Viera and Emmanual Petit. They offered the perfect balance of technical quality, defensive inhibition and offensive flair. However, Arsenal have this week been linked with a move for Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri, and it’s fair to say that the Ivorian could have a big impact. In fact, you could argue that by linking him up with long-standing Arsenal ace Aaron Ramsey, the Gunners could find the spiritual successor to Petit and Viera.
Whilst they may not have the muscle to rival a duo of Viera and Petit, what they lack in physical stature they more than make up for in technical brilliance. Both Seri and Ramsey are known for their ability on the ball, and that combination would allow them to devastate the attack and control the tempo of the midfield. Both are excellent passers of the ball, and so a midfield made up of them would be able to do what a midfield is supposed to do – run the game.
Their stats from last season hint at a pair that would be impossible to match.
Arsenal fans know exactly what Aaron Ramsey can do, and he proved that last season. With 7 goals and 8 assists, the Welshman was a real nuisance going forward, and he was once again one of Arsenal’s best players. However, whilst Seri’s stats don’t quite match up for that, there’s a very good reason for that. Whilst Ramsey likes to move forward, he tends to sit deeper and make an impression from afar. Thus, his stats can resultantly often be negatively affected.
That being said, he still holds up to Ramsey. He bagged 2 goals and 5 assists, which brings his total involvement up to 7, which is a very strong return for a player that isn’t famed for either of those two things. Furthermore, his passing success rate proves just what he can do – with a whopping 90.4% of his passes finding a friendly man. Ramsey’s success rate isn’t too far behind, but that just shows the level at which he plays.
This pair have everything. They can provide goals, but they can also score them – and their ability to pass would be unrivalled in the Premier League. If throw someone like Granit Xhaka in there to handle the more physical side of the game, Unai Emery would feel confident knowing that he has the ideal midfield.
Over to you, Unai.
