The Football Transfer Tavern is full of chatter in the run up to the much-publicised European winter Break and one rumour that is well worth putting the darts down for is that surrounding the future of young Mainz player, Jan Kirchhoff who has been attracting glances from all over Europe.
German paper BILD report that giants Bayern Munich are set to swoop for the German Under-21 international player with the youngster out of contract at the end of the season and currently set not to sign an extension. Bayern are confident that Mainz cannot afford to let Kirchhoff leave on a free and are set to make a bid come January.
However the defender’s general manager Christian Heidel has responded to the claims in a bullish manner, ignoring questions over the soon to be run down contract and he claimed that: “We have not received any offer for Jan Kirchhoff. That’s a fact. And honestly I do not really think Jan is very keen to change clubs right in the middle of a campaign.”
Whilst Heidel may be correct about the player not wishing to leave the club at present, Kirchhoff is unlikely to envisage his long-term future at the club, meaning that he will certainly go for free in the summer with Bayern and Inter Milan set to battle it out for his signature.
Should Mainz admit defeat and get what they can for the player in January? Vote in our polls below.
