Tottenham have six very good centre halves at present but struggle to get two available for a game each week.
Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King, Michael Dawson, William Gallas, Sebastien Bassong and Younes Kaboul have all had their injury problems this season and it looks as if Harry Redknapp is looking to strengthen even further.
The man in question: Blackburn’s captain, Christopher Samba. Physically he is bigger and stronger than probably anyone in the premier league and he is a major threat on set-pieces.
Do Tottenham need him though? He’s an average player, no better than what they have and he will just be there to make up the numbers in my opinion.
Tottenham are now in pole position to sign the Congolese international ahead of london rivals Fulham but links with former boss Mark Hughes and a higher chance of first team football might sway the former Hertha Berlin players’ decision.
I feel he’s too clumsy, makes mistakes too often and gets caught out a lot. Bassong and Woodgate have been linked with moves away from Spurs so if they do leave then yes they will need an extra defender to act as back-up. Samba has recently taken the captain’s armband but injuries have kept him out of the Christmas period.
He has a big role to play at Blackburn in their relegation battle this season so we will have to wait and see how it all unfolds. What we do know is caretaker boss Steve Kean is desperate to have him back and he wants to fend off interest from other clubs but if Samba wants to go then Spurs will be leading the race for his signature.
