Yohan Cabaye claims to be aware of interest from Manchester United.
The 26-year-old joined the Magpies last summer from Lille and was a huge success for Alan Pardew’s side, scoring 5 goals and assisting 9 in the process. He’s currently concentrating on his countries bid for glory at the Euros and, despite talk of a switch to Old Trafford, is apparently remaining focused on performing for Newcastle next season.
That is indeed what agents are for, and that’s exactly why Toon fans will be concerned. The Magpies finished fifth in the Premier League last season, narrowly missing out on Champions League football, But Cabaye is still keen on the idea of the Europa League:
“At Newcastle we will play in the Europa League. The atmosphere is already huge at St James Park with us in the Premier League and it seems stronger now we’re in Europe.”
Though United’s movements will concern Pardew as he plans to consolidate Newcastle’s position in the top 6 next season, it’s evident that the player himself has only kind words for his current employers. As for his time in England, Cabaye admitted the challenge for a foreign player arriving in the Premier League:
“When I came to England, I had to start again from scratch. There, they hardly knew me.
Some players did not even know I was a French champion, so I questioned myself, getting to the heart of the matter as quickly as possible. At Newcastle, I had to go and get it. The fight has been permanent.
Security would have been remaining at Lille but at that moment I didn’t think about it. I went to Newcastle to have success.”
As for United, they’ll be hoping the players awareness grows into a real desire to join the likes of Shinji Kagawa at Old Trafford this summer, rather than just another rejection.
