The Celtic fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a big summer. Indeed, while domestic dominance is all well and good, the punters propping up our bar are eager to see the club improve on the European front and, to do that, they need to make some big signings.
So, that’s exactly why reports from the Scottish Sun have gone down so badly. According to their report, Manchester United are keeping tabs on experienced stopper Craig Gordon as a potential back-up to David De Gea at Old Trafford.
United boss Jose Mourinho is understood to be resigned in his attempts to keep Argentina international Sergio Romero at the club this summer and, as such, is reportedly casting his eyes over potential replacements. In the aforementioned De Gea, he has one of the best ‘keepers in world football, so only needs an experienced and reliable back-up.
Gordon would fit that mould and the Scotsman is thought to be a potential target, along with Manchester City outcast Joe Hart. Clearly, neither would start over the Spaniard on a regular basis, though could represent solid understudies.
As you can imagine – with goalkeeping problems of their own – the Celtic fans here are hoping Gordon stays, even if Brendan Rodgers manages to bring in a signing of his own.
Gordon would probably be a smart signing for United, though Celtic shouldn’t allow him to depart. They proved they can battle Premier League giants on that front last summer when they fought off interest from Chelsea in the Scottish veteran and Brendan Rodgers is barely blessed between the posts right now.
On a lengthy contract, Gordon should stay in Glasgow.
