Yesterday’s copy of the Sunday People has been left on the bar and when collecting empty glasses I notice an intriguing story on the back page.
The paper speculates that Chelsea could trade in defender Ryan Bertrand as they attempt to sign Southampton left back Luke Shaw this summer.
The 18-year-old full back is regarded as one of the finest young talents in the Premier League following a series of stunning performances for the South Coast outfit.
These excellent displays have reportedly brought attention from a host of Premier League rivals, with Manchester United and Tottenham both previously linked with the England Under-21 international.
However it appears Chelsea are readying a deal that they believe would suit all parties.
Jose Mourinho plans to tempt the Saints into letting Shaw join the Blues by handing them a straight replacement in Bertrand, while including significant cash up front.
Southampton maintain that Shaw is not available at any price but the Blues are still thought to be keen on Shaw as they search for a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole, whose current contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer.
Bertrand was thought to be the man to replace Cole but since Mourinho’s arrival he has only made one appearance and now the 24-year-old could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge. The former Gillingham defender is also thought to be wanted by Liverpool.
Would a possible swap deal make any difference in Chelsea’s pursuit? Let us know your thoughts below.
