The Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern aren’t exactly happy right now. Indeed, despite winning the FA Cup only weeks ago, the Blues in our bar were gutted to hear the club would be stopping work on a new stadium, sparking all kinds of fears about Roman Abramovich.
With that in mind, our west London locals are eager to take their collective mind off of things. So, that’s exactly why reports from the Sun have proven rather interesting. According to them, those behind the scenes in SW6 are ready to make an informal approach to Zinedine Zidane and ask him if he’d like an immediate return to management after leaving European champions, Real Madrid.
The Frenchman is the only ever manager to win three Champions League titles on the spin and his decision to leave the Spanish capital has rocked the footballing world, with Chelsea now reportedly ready to act. As you can imagine, considering his track record in the dugout, Zizou would be a hugely popular appointment after a fairly miserable campaign under Antonio Conte, who is still actually in the job.
Appointing Zidane would be a stupid, stupid risk. Granted, he’s won a hell of a lot of trophies during his short managerial career, though they came with one of the best squads ever assembled. At Chelsea, who aren’t even in the Champions League, he’d face far more difficulty in riding the crest of a wave created by having such wonderful players.
