Despite a host of new signings arriving this summer, the left back postion remains a problem for Daglish, however this maybe about to change with Dutch international Erik Pieters, the latest to be linked with Liverpool.
Liverpool have been bold this transfer window, spending big money on mainly young British talent. Left back now remains the priority. Liverpool failed in their attempts to lure Gael Clichy, who chose instead to move to Man City.
The pool then courted Lyon’s Cissokho but he also opted out of a move to Anfiled. Their interest in the Toon’s talented left back Jose Enrique still remains. But now their main attention seems to have moved to PSV’s powerful 23 year old left back, Erik Pieters who stands at over 6ft.
Erik pieters has experience at the highest levels and at 23 has now replaced vetran Geovanni Van Bronkhorst in the Dutch national team. He will cost considrabley less than Jose Enrique with NUFC likely to hold out for over £8m.
Liverpool’s defence needs shoring up if this pre-season is anything to go by.Their showings are hardly a statement of their intentions to mount a much stronger campaign than last season. But everybody knows pre-season has little, if no, impact on a clubs season.
After all Liverpool fans will probably remember Andriy Voronin scoring bags full of fantastic goals during several pre-seasons at his time at the Anfield club; he could not hit a barn door during full season. Times are looking good for the red half of Merseyside!
