Cold Shoulder From Redknapp, But Garcia Would Appreciate Him

After struggling to hold down a place in the Tottenham side, Giovani dos Santos could be on the move during the summer.

According to the Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb, dos Santos could be on his way to Lille. With a number of clubs chasing their talismanic midfield Eden Hazard, the French side have the task of finding his replacement  as the Belgian looks set to move on during the transfer window. Dos Santos could be just the man they are looking for.

With excellent ball control and pace to burn, the Mexican would add another attacking dimension to an already dangerous Lille side. The reigning champions have scored 65 goals this season, the second best total in the league, a statistic that Giovani would certainly add to.

Questions may be asked about the 22-year-olds durability as injuries have plagued his time at Tottenham. Yet in large part such injuries are down to his lack of physical presence, a necessity in the Premier League but something that matters less in the technical Ligue 1.

The French side might also worry about his lack of starts at a club level. Dos Santos was a part of the famous la Masia (Barcelona’s youth academy) yet due to a lack of senior starts he left for Tottenham in 2008. Since arriving in North London, the attacking midfielder has struggled (only 30 appearances in four season for Spurs) which led to several loan spells around Europe.

Yet Lille manager Rudi Garcia only has to look to his international form to see the potential of the attacking midfielder. Dos Santos is a staple in the Mexican midfield and was voted the second best young player at the World Cup in 2010 behind Germany’s Thomas Muller. Coupled with Joe Cole (if he decides to stay in France), the pair could be devastating in the Lille midfield as they look to retain the crown that they seem to have lost in 2012.

Dos Santos is a good fit for the French champions. His diminutive stature would not be as much of a problem in France and his attacking flare would surely help a Lille side-lacking Hazard. Furthermore, the midfielder has plenty of club and international experience and at 22 years of age is still a talent for the future. Dos Santos is simply looking for the right club and Lille could just be the right place at the right time.
