It seems the rumours of a clear-out and new beginning under Kenny Dalglish at Anfield will not die down, and the latest player to be placed under the exacting eye of the Liverpool faithful is Real Sociedad’s dynamic dribbler, 27-year-old Spaniard, Xabier Prieto.
The right-winger, who wears deceptively wears the number 10 for Sociedad, is being linked with a summer move to the Merseyside giants as part of Kenny’s rebuilding exercise, part of which is the reconstruction of his side’s flanks, which have had to make do with misfits and strikers for too long.
While most attention has been drawn to the left-side, with many a left-back touted as the probable new face at Anfield, Lyon’s Michel Bastos and former Red, John Arne Riise just two of the names in the frame, attention is now moving to the midfield, where Dalglish is hoping to bring a long run without natural wingers to an end by signing the £10million-rated Prieto.
27-year-old Prieto has played with Real Sociedad his entire career, making his debut in 2003 and has worked his way up to become one of the first names on the team-sheet. He is a technically-impressive player, who can supply excellent crosses with his right and who also takes penalties for the Basque club. Having only been promoted from the second tier last season, Sociedad are currently performing fairly well, in 12th place in the league, but a move to Liverpool would be a massive step-up for the 6’1″ Prieto.
Kenny Dalglish is yet to make his interest in the player official, but the Spaniard’s agent, Miguel Angel Cermeno, is aware of how keen the Reds are on his charge,
“No one has been in contact with me yet, although it is true that they (Liverpool) are interested and there have been a few Liverpool scouts watching him at various games”
Buying a decent winger with a good shot, dribbling skills and perhaps most importantly, a good final ball into the area seems a good idea, especially with the new-found aerial threat of Andy Carroll, whose strength in the area and ability in the air are crying out for quality service from the flanks.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will put in an official bid for Prieto, but while Kenny ponders on his final decision, why not have a look at what the tricky Spaniard has to offer, below:
