Do Tottenham really need this defensive midfielder?

Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern tonight are still concerned about the lack of movement in the transfer market, but do they really need this man?

It really surprises our landlord how no Premier League club have snapped up Sporting Lisbon midfielder, William Carvalho.

Not necessarily due to his talent, just because of the number of rumours there were.

At the start of the transfer window, Carvalho along with Bakayoko and Morata were the three players who seemed destined to come to the Premier League.

Whilst Bakayoko has made his move to Chelsea and Morata rumours are still circulating, rumours of a Carvalho move seemed to have died down.

They haven’t died down completely though and with Tottenham looking like they could land the Portuguese international, let’s look at whether that would be a good move for them.

Carvalho is a more traditional defensive midfielder at a time when the Makelele or Kante role is coming back to prominence.

He’s tall and a strong figure to have sat in front of your back line.

In the Portuguese league last season, Carvalho made: 1.9 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 1.1 clearances per game for Sporting.

Pretty good numbers overall but looking at Victor Wanyama’s numbers in those same stats, it casts doubt over the worth of Carvalho.

Wanyama managed: 2.5 tackles, 1 interception and 1.9 clearances per game.

With those superior numbers and Wanyama being a fan favourite for Spurs, a move for Carvalho wouldn’t make any sense at this time.

Although there are some Tottenham fans out there who would love to see Carvalho sign, our landlord just can’t see the use.
