Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are in an extremely good mood after the Saints confirmed the signing of Celtic’s composed Dutch centre back Virgil Van Dijk.
Van Dijk underwent a medical and has agreed a five-year contract at St Mary’s. The defender will add some much needed steel to the Saints defence after they have endured a mixed start to the season.
Signed from Groningen after three successful seasons, he won two successive titles and a Scottish cup during his time with Celtic and will be looking for more success as he starts his Premier League career under the manager of compatriot Ronald Koeman.
However, Zambian international striker Emmanuel Mayuka moves in the opposite direction as he joins French club Metz on a three-year deal.
The striker was signed after impressive displays in the 2012 African Cup of Nations which saw him finish as the leading goal scorer in the tournament. He leaves Southampton with a disappointing record of 1 goal in 19 appearances and spent last season on Loan at French club Lorient.
Our resident Saints fans here in the Transfer Tavern are absolutely buzzing here and feel he will shore up the club’s defence!
