Dynamic Duo To The Emirates? Wenger’s On A Face Saving Mission

With the rumours about Robin Van Persie becoming as regular as David Cameron doing something moronic and news that Theo Walcott may not be an Arsenal player next season, Wenger is looking to strengthen his attacking options again.

It seems that having two of Europe’s brightest young stars added to your attack is not enough and the man so often criticised for not spending is, well …spending.

The Daily Mail has gone with a story today linking not one but two attacking midfielders to the Emirates. Brazilian Paulinho of Corinthians, is fresh from his Copa Libertadores victory and subject to a £9million bid according to the British paper. And a name often linked with Arsenal in recent weeks Lewis Holtby, currently at Schalke, claims to be happy in the Bundesliga but with one year left on his contract Wenger smells blood.

Now that Benayoun has finished his loan and a strange level of uncertainty surrounding Walcott’s future has appeared as if from nowhere, Wenger would do well to add both players to the club. Paulinho is only 23 but has built up some good experience at Corinthians and has just broken into the Brazil team too. According to Wikipedia he is known for his mental toughness which is certainly an attribute that Arsenal need in their midfield but then again Wikipedia isn’t known for its trustworthy journalism.

Lewis Holtby seems to be a player that could fit the mould of Arsenal. Only 21 and plenty of game time in the Bundesliga with a few lesser teams but having broken into the Schalke ranks he is regarded highly there and they have insisted he isn’t for sale.

This rumour can be viewed in two ways; either Wenger is doing some more panic buying, similar to when he brought in Arteta, Mertesacker et al, or this is just another legless rumour linked to Arsenal because a lot of Gunner fans want to read something positive about there club with another set of stars about to potentially leave.

From what I have read elsewhere Inter Milan are also rumoured to be interested in Paulinho and can offer a lot more money that Arsenal. Holtby is a name often linked with Arsenal but based on a quote he said nearly a year a go, in which he said he liked Everton and Arsenal and would like a move to the Premier League.

For me Paulinho would be a good signing but it seems too out there for me. Wenger has a bad track record with south American players and he seems to think of Europe as his preferred shopping market. Holtby however could go either way.

The fact he has a year left on his contract suggests that a move is more possible and with more and more players coming to England from the Bundesliga I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the country that his father was born in.

Arsenal fans think what you will of these transfers as I may be completely wrong about them but considering the facts I could’t see Wenger going for them both unless RVP and Walcott hand in transfer requests today. I would hope they have a bit more respect than that.
