Fulham eye further summer additions

jol.jpgFulham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have found reports from London24 this morning that suggest manager Martin Jol has revealed that he is still looking to add ‘one or two more players to his squad after ‘ambitious’ new investment.

The Dutch manager has already added a number of new faces to his team but feels that the squad needs strength to cope with potential injuries and suspensions during the upcoming campaign.

The Cottagers ended their summer tour of Costa Rica yesterday with a penalty shootout victory over Deportivo Saprissa and Jol has admitted he was happy with this side’s performances but thinks that strength in depth would also be beneficial.

He told Fulham’s official website: “Of course, this was our last game of the week so we looked a bit tired. They were fresh, they’re a good team actually.

“We saw maybe eight, nine, 10 very good players here so it was a very good exercise and we could train well and we played good games, all the players were involved. It was almost perfect.

“We are still looking for one or two players to make it 100 per cent. You saw 22, 23 players and they did their best.

Fulham finished a disappointing 12th place last season after a poor end to the campaign and Jol puts this poor run of form down to the lack of quality back up players.

He added: “We would like to be in the top 10. We were a bit unlucky last year because we missed a lot of players – Mousa Dembele went, then of course top scorer Clint Dempsey went and Danny Murphy, then Mahamadou Diarra was injured.

“Steve Sidwell was suspended for seven games, so it was too much probably on the shoulders of Bryan and I feel this year will be our year again as we have good quality and I feel that we are very positive.”

The Craven Cottage club have already been productive in the transfer market this summer after signing highly rated Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, centre back Fernando Amorebieta and midfielder Derek Boateng. But Jol, who met with new owner Shahid Khan on Friday, will be hoping to add more new blood before their league campaign kicks off against Sunderland on August 17.

Fulham fans. Are you happy with the quality of your signings so far this summer? Who should the Cottagers target next?
