According to reports in L’Equipe, Tottenham face stiff competition for the signature of Standard Liege’s promising young defender Eliaquim Mangala. The French under-21 international has enjoyed a successful campaign in Belgium attracting interest from French duo Lille and PSG, as well as Serie A sides Juventus and Udinese.
The athletic centre-back is believed to be available for £4m, meaning Spurs will have to act quickly to lure him to White Hart Lane.
The players agent Fabrizio Ferrari, has only encouraged any possible move to England. Telling TribalFootball.com,
“I hope to have some offers from English clubs (in the summer)”
“I think he is ready to move on and play in another championship – even if Standard is regarded as one of the top clubs in Europe”.
Mangala has a contract which runs until 2013, but is keen on a move to a bigger club after three seasons in the Jupiter Pro League. The youngster courted by the Belgium national side, committed his future to France in 2009 making his debut for the under-21 side in a friendly against Tunisia.
Likened to Spurs defender William Gallas for his style of play. The 20-year old has already netted against bitter north-London rivals Arsenal during a Champions league group match last season.
The highly rated stopper has attracted admirers across Europe, if he does choose to swap Liege for London. Once again, Harry’s movements in the transfer window would have come up trumps as he looks to build a side capable of securing Champions league football next season.
