Iconic Brazilian defender returns home

For someone who has won just about every trophy you can imagine and been a rock at the heart of defences over the last decade, it is understandable that here at the Football Transfer Tavern we have a soft spot for Lucio, who was without a club after being released by Juventus.

In news that has made us as happy as two-for-one burger deals do, we hear via Sky Sports that he has now found somewhere to ply his trade and it is none other than Sao Paulo, back in Lucio’s homeland of Brazil.

Both player and club seem overjoyed with this latest development, as director of football Adalberto Baptista claimed to the Sao Paulo official website that: “Lucio is an old dream for Sao Paulo, in July we came close to signing him, but it was not possible. Thankfully things worked out this time and he will add quality, experience and leadership to our squad.”

The 34-year-old has struggled in Serie A this term and with interest from Schalke as well, it was always a return to Brazil that was going to appeal to the former World Cup winner even more.

Do you think Juventus should have kept hold of Lucio? Vote in our polls below.
