Over the last few days, the mood towards Michy Batshuayi has completely changed in the Transfer Tavern. The Belgian was Chelsea’s hero on Saturday against Watford, bagging two goals for the Blues, saving the club from yet another disappointing loss in the process. That wasn’t the first time that he’s been the hero, either, with a key goal against Atletico Madrid securing another vital three points for the Blues. In truth, he’s becoming a bit of a fan favourite in the pub.
However, it doesn’t seem as though he’s a popular figure amongst everyone at Chelsea, with Antonio Conte reportedly still yet to be convinced by him. According to Simon Johnson of the Evening Standard, the Belgian’s future at Chelsea remains distinctively uncertain despite his recent upturn in form. It seems as though he will need to continue to impress for a few weeks yet if Antonio Conte is going to be able to fully trust his second-choice forward.
In truth, it’s no real surprise, as Batshuayi has become a very frustrating player at Chelsea. He can score goals, and he has scored pretty frequently this term, but his general play is still not up to par. That said, poor hold-up play can be forgiven if he continues to put the ball in the net, and so Batshuayi desperately needs to maximise the strong aspects of his play as he looks to mask his inadequacies.
A few goals against Everton tonight will certainly get him back on side a bit more, whilst if he continues to deputise well for Alvaro Morata over the next few weeks, his manager will not be able to ignore him.
Batshuayi is a player that often blows hot and cold. He can be sensational, as he was against Watford, or he can be very poor, as he was against Burnley on the opening day.
He knows where the net is, and if he can improve a few of the other aspects of his play, then he may be able to secure a future at Stamford Bridge. Otherwise, the end of his time in London could be in sight.
