Leeds United got their Championship campaign off to a fine start by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Elland Road. A first half strike from Luciano Becchio was enough to see of promotion favourites Wolverhampton Wanderers.
An atmospheric Elland Road burst into life in the first half as Leeds United took the game to their opponents in the first 20 minutes. Some slick passing and rock solid defending were the catalyst, as route one turned into route two, with the ball being passed just twice before Luciano Becchio headed home from close range.
Rookie defender Sam Byram looked years beyond his age, as he more than coped with hot property Matt Jarvis. A lackluster Wolves were being easily shunned by an immensely improved Leeds back four.
Paul Green was running his socks off in the first half, only to be taken off injured with what looked like a twisted knee. In his place, came the panto villain El-Hadji Diouf, who instantaneously showed his class, with slick first touches and well timed passes.
The second half threw up little drama as Wolves looked to find an equaliser. The recently relegated side, at times looked in complete disarray. This was not helped by the huge spirit on show from every Leeds United player on the pitch. Most notably Rodolph Austin, who put in a sensational performance and instantly became the fan’s favourite after just one game.
A great win and a great start for Leeds United. A tough trip on Tuesday awaits them, as they take on Blackpool on the back of an up lifting opening day victory.
