Liverpool can’t make the top four without the striker they need, says ex-Anfield hero

Brendan Rodgers' sides usually improve after Christmas Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are feeling the pressure following the comments of former Anfield hero John Aldridge claiming to Metro that the Reds will not see a top-four finish next season if they fail to sign a proven goalscorer.

Liverpool haven’t been shy in signing players this summer, with the recent addition of the £29m Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino.

A large proportion of the Liverpool supporting punters here inside the Transfer Tavern are expecting Rodgers to sign more players this summer, ahead of a push for the top four of the Premier League next season.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking to fix the lack of goals his squad provided last campaign, and Aldridge believes Liverpool will miss out on a Champions League spot if they fail to sign a goalscorer.

‘Liverpool have bought some good players in recent weeks but they will struggle to finish in the top four because they haven’t bagged a proven goalscorer,’ said Aldridge to Metro.

‘I’m very happy with Clyne as we need someone in that position, Firmino should slot right in and Milner is a good signing following the departure of Gerrard.

‘But they have not signed the 20-goal-a-season player they really need. Unfortunately Sturridge will not deliver that many goals and Ings will struggle to get the chances in his first season.

‘They haven’t replaced Suarez and that’s what they had to do. You need someone who will score 20+goals season in, season out and they still haven’t got that player.

‘And without that striker they will not break into the top four – where the fans expect them to be.’

Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern agrees with what Aldridge has to say, and argue that the club need a player like Benteke to go out and lead the line for the Reds next season!
