Must be the Daily Mirror’s employees’ day off as now David Maddock is in the ‘Football Transfer Tavern’ and is talking about a player whose name I wouldn’t like to try and pronounce after a few vodka and cokes.
The player is Schalke defender, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and David believes the £12 million-rated centre back is a target for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers has always maintained he wants to sign another centre back, despite the arrival of Kolo Toure from Manchester City on a free transfer, and it sounds like Papadopoulos is his man.
The Premier League side have tried to sign Papadopoulos before but a troubling knee injury, picked up at the end of last season, scuppered Rodgers’ plans to sign the Greece international. However, the 21-year-old has now recovered sufficiently and should have no problem passing a medical.
Liverpool’s renewed interest comes after reports emerged that Napoli boss Rafa Benitez (cries of “Istanbul 2005” echo around the bar and someone has now put ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ on, on the jukebox).
Sorry, I was distracted by the singing. Yeah, as I was saying, Benitez wants to bring Martin Skrtel to Napoli and with the Slovakian international not a guaranteed starter under Rodgers, it is believed he’d welcome the chance to join the Serie A side.
Is Kyriakos Papadopoulos the right man for Liverpool?
