The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for a title challenge this season…
The last few years have seen a period of development at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp building quite the squad since his arrival.
Still, if the Reds genuinely want to compete with the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City on a regular basis, it’s clear that they need a few more big names to really improve the first team.
It’s tough to make that happen, at present, given the financial climate seen in European football – but a certain player’s current circumstances could give them a slight advantage.
According to Diario Gol, Liverpool are keen on a move for Mateo Kovacic, and whilst he is seen primarily as a replacement for Coutinho should he leave, the Reds’ interest appears very genuine.
Klopp, it is said, is a big fan of the midfielder, and whilst the 23-year-old is clearly hesitant to leave Real Madrid, the prospect of earning twice the salary and earning regular game time is said to be attractive to the midfielder – potentially opening the door for a Liverpool move.
Now, it must be noted, that a deal still remains highly unlikely. Madrid are unlikely to want to part with a player that could be seen as the future of their midfield, whilst any move, if it did happen, would demand a huge fee, but if nothing else this proves that Liverpool are keen to invest in top European talent.
Kovacic is one of Europe’s best players, and so Real Madrid won’t want to let him go, though there’s no doubting that he would become the vocal point of the Reds’ midfield were he to make the move.
It’s looking likely that Coutinho will stay at Anfield, and so, as a result, Liverpool likely won’t have the funds, nor will they feel the need, to spend big on the midfielder – but this is certainly an interesting report to keep an eye on.
