The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have very high hopes for Joe Gomez…
Signed as a teenager, the defender was a surprise package at Anfield – immediately making an impact for the Reds. However, a cruel injury has set back his development somewhat, and this summer is looking set to be a very important one for the player.
According to the Daily Star, a decision will be made on Gomez’s future this summer – with Jurgen Klopp considering sending the defender out on loan to help him develop. Significantly, Klopp is said to see him as a big part of his plans, and so his performances in pre-season could be decisive.
There is no doubting the quality that Gomez has. Prior to his injury, he was actually a semi-regular for the Reds, and many in the pub were touting him to become a mainstay going forward. Strong defensively and surprisingly efficient going forward, he played like a figure far senior in years.
However, having spent much of the last year recovering, and with the emergence of Liverpool’s fairly resolute back line, it is going to be tough for the defender to force his way back into the plans of Jurgen Klopp. Indeed, there are parallels between the defender and that of Chelsea centre-half Kurt Zouma. Both played regularly, but injuries have halted their development.
That being said, our landlord is backing both for big things – particularly Gomez – though a loan may be best next season.
