Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham will battle it out for Palermo’s highly-rated midfielder Josip Ilicic after a £25m price-tag was slapped on him by President Maurizio Zamparini, the Metro has reported.
The London clubs have each scouted the Bosnian born, Slovenian international after he continued with his impressive form since joining the Italian side from Maribor in the summer of 2010 for a mere €2.3m. Dazzling form and persistent interest from the Premier League has now forced Palermo’s brash President to pin a £25m tag on his shrewd 23 year-old investment. Zamparini certainly knows how to deal with prospective buyers looking to poach his players – £34.3m he negotiated out of Paris St. Germain for Argentine play-maker, Javier Pastore!
Such a price tag may scare off the likes of Wenger who’s shown a reluctance to part with large sums of money in the past but Villas-Boas and Redknapp may be open to negotiation. Both clubs interest in the 6ft 3in attacking-midfielder stems back to February this year when Ilicic’s agent, Amir Ruznic claimed a number of Premiership clubs were very keen on his player. “Clubs from England are going crazy for him – Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea all want him,” he told Sportal.
“But Chelsea wants him the most. There is also interest from Spain, other Italian clubs and Russia.
“Clubs are ready to pay €15m for Ilicic but that is not enough. If someone is ready to pay €20-25m then something could happen.
“But he won’t leave for less than €20m, that is for sure.”
Ilicic signed a new 5-year contract during the summer, hence the hike in asking-price from February. If any of the London clubs are willing to part with £25m then they will own a versatile attacker who can cover positions behind the striker as well as each flank.
