The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been expecting major changes to their team all summer long. Fortunately, it appears as though some much-needed moves could be on the way.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea have launched a £35 million bid to sign Juventus defender Daniele Rugani – with the Blues clearly eager to improve their defensive options. Significantly, it is noted that his arrival would theoretically leave David Luiz with an uncertain future.
According to Transfer Markt, Rugani’s market value is around the £19.8 million mark, indicating that Chelsea’s bid is a sizeable one.
Though it would be sad to see Luiz leave Stamford Bridge, our landlord thinks that a move to replace him with Rugani has the potential to be Chelsea’s biggest move of the summer.

After all, you truly have to consider where Luiz is currently at when looking at this deal. He hardly played last season, and when he did, he really struggled. He was exposed in Europe against Roma, and from then on, it was less of a fall from grace and more of a deathly leap from which he was unable to recover.
He has made just 4 appearances in 2018, and that’s a testament to his role in this team. Granted, he was injured for a lot of that – but that tells another story too. That indicates that he might no longer be ready to play week-in-week-out, and that’s only going to worsen over time.
Meanwhile, Rugani enjoyed a fantastic season last year. He made over 20 league appearances for Juventus, and he began to show a lot of potential. With no clear downsides to his game, the Italian continues to hone his craft but his form has indicated that he’s more than ready to play for a big team every week. At Chelsea, with the departure of Luiz, he’d certainly get that opportunity.
Of course, it’s not quite that simple, and Chelsea will still need to find a home for Luiz – which won’t be easy – but if Chelsea are able to effectively trade Luiz and some cash for a player like Rugani, it would be huge for the club.
