With the hangover from their big EFL Cup-winning day at Wembley just about wearing off, Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have turned their attention back to Jose Mourinho’s squad and plans for the summer transfer window, with Stefan de Vrij being talked about.
Despite their stunning form during the winter period, the Red Devils remain rooted in sixth place, with a major factor in this being their slow start to the season.
After winning three on the spin to start with, Man United slumped during the Autumn months, with goals not being scored regularly and too many going in at the wrong end, which contributed to a league run of two wins in 11 games between September and early December.
But it seems that this summer there could be plans afoot to address some concerns, with the Express claiming that Lazio’s De Vrij may be on his way to Old Trafford for £30m.
It’s understood that the 30-cap Netherlands international is a player Mourinho admires and with his contract due to expire in Rome in 2018, the Serie A side will sell him on for the aforementioned fee.
All of this points to a deal being doable, and as one pessimistic punter pointed out, Louis van Gaal wanted the versatile defender in 2014, which has somewhat deflated fans around the pool table given the Dutchman’s miserable spell at the Theatre of Dreams.
