The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are still celebrating the arrival of Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean is, undoubtedly, one of Europe’s best players – having impressed for Arsenal in the Premier League over the last few years. Though Man Utd had a tough spell on the transfer front prior to the arrival of Jose Mourinho, they really seem to have turned over a new leaf now. Big names like Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and now Sanchez have moved to Old Trafford over the last 18 months – and there is at least a chance that further quality could come soon as well.
According to the Independent, Man Utd are monitoring several Real Madrid players with a view to, if they become available, making moves in the future. Significantly, Real Madrid are said to have told several Premier League clubs that a few players could be available – perhaps giving the Red Devils an opening. Keen to secure funds to be able to re-invest in their squad, a number of high-profile Real Madrid players could be available – it is said.
Though, of course, at this stage their interest is simply just interest, the prospect of Real Madrid looking to rebuild and sell on a few players could be interesting for Man Utd.
The case of Raphael Varane, in particular, is of particular interest. The Real Madrid regular burst onto the scene under Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu, meaning that there is a connection between the Frenchman and the Man Utd boss.
For Man Utd, it’s no real surprise that he is one of the names that they are keen on. One of Europe’s most talented defenders, Varane is dominant at the back – providing fantastic, consistent quality in a team that often places far more focus on attacking rather than defending.
Whether Man Utd are able to seal a deal for him remains to be seen, but the Red Devils will be keeping a close eye on his situation.
At any other time, you’d think that Man Utd would have no chance of signing Varane – but that’s no longer the case. Sure, he’s a regular, and he’s the sort of player that they would likely want to keep, but current circumstances at Madrid could force major changes.
They’re really struggling in La Liga at present, and if they continue to fall behind Barcelona, you’d expect the Madrid brass to completely rebuild the team.
Given that Varane has an average rating of just 6.84 (according to WhoScored) in La Liga this term, he’s certainly not untouchable. If there’s any chance of him being available, Man Utd should do all they can to land him.
If he isn’t available, perhaps they would have more chance of landing Casemiro – who is a very talented player too. Either way, a transfer opening could be on the horizon for Man Utd.
