According to the Sun, midfielder Ander Herrera is ready to commit his long-term future to Man Utd in news that will be a huge boost for the Red Devils. His current contract is set to expire this summer, and so the prospect of him leaving on free was, up until this point, a very realistic possibility.
Now, though, retaining the Spaniard seems far more likely, and for Man Utd and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, this is great news – as Herrera is perhaps the greatest example of the Red Devils’ remarkable turnaround in form.
Prior to the arrival of Solskjaer, Herrera found himself out of favour. Despite enjoying a brilliant run of form during Jose Mourinho’s early days, he wasn’t being utilised under the Portuguese, and when he did play, he wasn’t performing particularly well.
However, the second that the new manager came in, that all changed. He quickly went back into the team and became arguably more crucial than ever – becoming one of the main men in the midfield as a result. Whilst Paul Pogba has gotten the majority of the accolades, Herrera has been a shining light that has gone somewhat under the radar, and he’s been invaluable.
That was perhaps best highlighted against Chelsea on Monday. Herrera was tasked with taking Chelsea’s creative midfielder Jorginho out of the game, and he did so to brilliant effect. The Italian is the lynchpin of the Chelsea first team, and when he struggles, so often do the Blues as a collective. So when Herrera moved towards him and didn’t give him the time to create any magic, Chelsea were stifled as a result – and that’s one of the core reasons why the Blues were so poor against the Red Devils.
It hasn’t just been the Chelsea game in which Herrera has been crucial this term. That’s just one example in a long line of game-changing performances from the ever-reliable midfielder.
So, renewing his contract makes perfect sense at this stage of the season. He’s proven his worth and then some, and he’ll continue to be crucial as long as he’s given chances.
