Alex McLeish will make his first foray into the transfer market this week, with a double swoop for Tottenham pair David Bentley and Jermain Defoe. McLeish is hopeful that a £15m bid will be enough to secure the duo’s signatures.
Jermain Defoe is a divisive player amongst Tottenham fans currently. For every supporter who wants him to stay and regain his goalscoring prowess, there is another who believes he ought to be sold and replaced with someone who will perform more consistently and elevate the club’s league position once again.
Bentley however has struggled to make any real impact since his £15m move from Blackburn Rovers. Bar the odd decent long range effort, Bentley has contributed very little to the considerable uplift in Tottenham’s performances under Harry Redknapp.
A loan spell was inevitable for Bentley who was unable to displace either Aaron Lennon, Luka Modric or Gareth Bale in the side. And it was Birmingham under McLeish that he went.
McLeish is looking to replace Ashley Young on the right side of Villa’s midfield and teaming up with Bentley again is thought to be favourable to the Scot. Despite a fairly ineffectual half-season at St. Andrews, Bentley showed flashes of his old ability and McLeish believes he is the man to return him to his former glories.
Defoe however is a harder one to envisage. It is difficult to see the England striker taking a backwards step and joining Villa, such has been Tottenham’s rise in stature during his second spell at the club. However, it is conceivable that his hand may be forced if Redknapp so desires.
After all… Tottenham’s strikers let the side down last year.
