With Luis Suarez scoring a fantastic hat-trick against Norwich this weekend to record Liverpool’s first win of the current campaign, we at the tavern look back at hat-tricks of the past.
A player scoring three goals in a game is rare, unless you’re Messi, but those who have, had their names written in the folklore of their respective clubs. Every hat-trick is special, but what are the five best?
- Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink: Chelsea Vs Tottenham
One of the best strikers to ever grace the Premier League, Hasselbaink seemed to get a kick out of scoring against Spurs, and this marvellous hat-trick was no exception. Considered in football to be the perfect hat-trick, he scored two beautiful curling screamers with his left foot, and his right, with an incredible bullet header in between.
- Luis Suarez: Liverpool Vs Norwich
He gets a lot of stick from the media and opposing fans alike, and justifiably so for many reasons, but none can deny the talent the Uruguayan possesses, and he demonstrated that in spades against Norwich. His first goal a well placed shot that went through three defenders and the goalkeeper, and his third goal a clam curler that sailed past the keeper. However it was his second goal that stole the show, a beautiful tackle to dispossess a Norwich defender, he deftly flicks the ball with the outside of his foot to score a sensational goal.
- Robbie Fowler: Liverpool Vs Arsenal
Four minutes and thirty three seconds, that’s the amount of time it took Fowler to score not one, not two, but three brilliant goals against Arsenal in 1994.
With some fantastic counter-attacking football by The Reds, Fowler’s first came through a deft free kick which he latched onto to slam it past David Seaman, his second came through a great drive from his left foot, which wrong footed both the defender and the keeper. His third goal was the most memorable, a wonderful attacking display from Fowler allowed him to break through both Keown and Seaman, before scoring from close range at a nearly 90 degree angle.
- Dimitar Berbatov: Manchester United Vs Liverpool
Always one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season, this game resulted in a magnificent hat-trick by the Bulgarian magician Berbatov. An excellent header from near the edge of the box, the first wonderful goal of his in the game, powering past Jose Reina. His second goal is one that will never be forgotten, a wonderful display of control by Berbatov to lay the ball up in front of him, with his back to goal, Berbatov brilliantly flicked the ball behind him to score a wonderful volley off the crossbar. His third goal to complete his route also a fantastic header, to ensure he will be remembered as an icon by United fans.
- Kanu: Chelsea Vs Arsenal
Chelsea had not conceded at Stamford Bridge when they entertained Arsenal during the 99/00 season, and it seemed like that would continue when they took a two nil lead over Arsenal. However, they hadn’t counted on Kanu working his magic. his first goal an low accurate finish which wiggled its way past two Chelsea defenders. His second goal started with great control from an Overmars cross, before powering it past the Chelsea goalkeeper. But his third goal may be one of the best goals in the Premier Leagues history, by skimming the goalkeeper outside the box, he somehow managed to cross into the net, a 90 degree angled strike that flew over two Chelsea players heads. This twenty minute hat-trick ensured Arsenal claimed all three points.
