Newcastle United supporters inside the Football Transfer Tavern have been left excited by the news the club are chasing a highly-rated Portugese striker, courtesy of Simon Jones of the Daily Mail.
The Toon are said to have made an enquiry about the availability of Sporting Braga striker Eder, who is valued at around £16 million.
Mike Ashley is reportedly looking to agree a deal that would see Newcastle pay £8 million up front, and the rest in add ons.
The club have been looking for a striker since January to replace Demba Ba, who made a £7 million January switch to Chelsea.
Newcastle endured a difficult campaign last season, which saw them only narrowly avoid relegation.
Manager Alan Pardew has been assured he will be backed in the transfer market to turn things around, and the Portuguese forward looks to be his number one target.
Other targets include Saint-Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Vitesse Arnhem’s Wilfried Bony and Ajax’s Siem de Jong, although these players are all attracting interest from clubs in the Champions League.
Twenty-five-year-old Eder has also attracted interest from London trio West Ham United, Arsenal and Tottenham over the past year.
The 6 ft 2 in striker’s value has soared in the past year though, having enjoyed an impressive Champions League campaign, which saw him play admirably against Manchester United.
