Newcastle defender looks to exit

Newcastle United fans have been left stunned in the Football Transfer Tavern, after Martin Hardy of The Independent dropped by to inform us that club captain Fabio Coloccini is looking to leave the club.

The 30-year-old has reportedly told club officials he wants to leave this January transfer window to return home to Argentina, and his representatives have flown to Tyneside to discuss their options.

The news will come as a bitter blow to Alan Pardew, whose Newcastle side have really struggled for form this season and have managed just two victories in their last 16 league games.

Coloccini by his own admission has also struggled this term. The Argentinian was one of the stand out performers for the Magpies last season, but has struggled to replicate the form that almost led the Magpies to a top four finish.

Should he leave, Coloccini’s most likely destination will be a return to his former club San Lorenzo, for whom he played during the 2000/01 season. Their president Matias Lammens has already spoken  publicly of his hopes to sign the player.

“Coloccini to San Lorenzo is the plan A, B and C,” Lammens said. “He represents much more than football – he played here six months and was champion, his father works at the club and is a fan. The deadline is next week but we cannot do anything crazy with the budget.”

Pardew will be desperate to hang on to his captain having already lost star striker Demba Ba this January, but whether he can remains to be seen.

Newcastle fans, how much of a blow would it be to lose Coloccini? Who can you see replacing him? Vote in our polls below.
