There are interested looks around the Football Transfer Tavern as Metro report that Newcastle United have been offered a cut price deal for former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o as Anzhi Makhachkala try to offload their highest paid player.
The Russian side have announced they will be slashing their budget by 60 per cent following the withdrawal of funds by their billionaire owner and the 32-year-old has one been told to find a new club for the upcoming season.
Back in 2011, Anzhi broke all records after handing the Cameroon international a massive £350,000-a-week contract when completing the £17 million signing from Inter Milan.
Serie A outfits Napoli and Genoa are already thought to have contacted Anzhi, while his agent is eager to see him playing in England.
Sources in Russia suggest that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is looking for a reunion with the player he managed at Inter Milan but now the Magpies have been offered the chance to sign the forward.
Controversial sporting director Joe Kinnear is yet to respond to the offer, but it is thought the transfer would involve a fee of around £5 million while the Cameroon ace would have to suffer a large decrease in wages if he was to accept a switch to St. James’ Park.
The proposal will be attractive to Kinnear, who is desperate to win over supporters with a big name striker, but he has so far been left ruing close misses.
Loic Remy has been signed on a loan deal from Championship side QPR however, but Bafetimbi Gomis and Darrent Bent look unlikely to arrive despite intense speculation.
