Lomana Tresor Lua Lua scored a stunning goal to help Blackpool record an impressive 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and set up an FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Everton.
After being held to a 1-1 draw at home by the League One side, Blackpool knew they would have to show a big improvement at Hillsborough if they were to avoid a Cup upset.
But Ian Holloway’s side produced a superb display as goals from Matt Phillips, Ludovic Sylvestre and Lua Lua ensured they now make a lucrative trip to Goodison Park.
Holloway’s side have hit form at just the right time of the season and are now unbeaten in eight games. They got off to a dream start too, when they opened the scoring after just seven minutes. Phillips stole all the headlines when he scored a hat-trick in the Third Round win over Fleetwood and he was among the goals once again.
Blackpool broke away down the left hand side and after Lua Lua’s shot was blocked, the ball fell to Phillips who struck a first time shot past Stephen Bywater into the corner of the net.
It was certainly the start that Holloway would have been looking for and gave them the confidence to go on and win the game by three goals.
Lua Lua then scored a spectacular goal on 14 minutes to double the lead for the Championship side. Blackpool keeper Matt Gilks picked out the former Newcastle forward who played a fortunate one-two with Kevin Phillips. Lua Lua then showed all his quality by curling a superb shot from the edge of the area past Bywater into the top corner.
Blackpool put the game beyond Sheffield Wednesday when they added a third on 54 minutes. Liam Palmer lost possession for the home side and Blackpool quickly broke away. Phillips back-heeled the ball into the path of Sylvestre and he curled the ball past Bywater into the far right corner to complete an impressive victory and book their place in the next round of the competition when they face Premier League opposition.
