Newcastle have reported followed in Arsenals steps in agreeing their first summer signing already, but who in the world is he? According to the Daily Mirror Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign Romain Amalfitano from French Ligue 2 club Reims.
For those of you left scratching your heads he’s a 22-year-old attacking midfielder, brother of France and Marseille star Morgan Amalfitano. He’s been on Alan Pardew’s radar for months, and sources from the French media now claim a deal has been sealed.
Amalfitano, who will be available on a free transfer, has reportedly signed a three-year deal for the Champions League hopefuls.
It wouldn’t be the first time Pardew’s delved into the French market for talent either, after the managerial genius nabbed Yohan Cabaye from Lille last summer in a move which was scrutinised by many. Cabaye has since been a revelation, and you wouldn’t bet against Pardew’s most recent acquisition turning into an absolute world beater. Everything the former Hammers boss touches turns to Gold after all.
He will however hope his new signing will fare a little better than compatriot Sylvain Marveaux, who left Rennes for the North East last year and has since made 6 appearances without doing anything much.
Amalfitano has scored 6 times in 47 appearances for Reims, and could find himself settling down at a top four club come July.
