Whilst here at the Football Transfer Tavern we mainly focus our attention on players these days it seems that managers are just as news worthy and given the appointment of Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, that is no surprise. It seems that even Marca agree.
The former Barcelona manager took a well publicised sabbatical this season after leaving the Catalan giants citing that he needed a break. The manager only won the Copa del Rey – the Spanish equivalent to the FA Cup – in his final season at the club and claimed he needed a year out.
Of course whilst mere mortals would respect and understand this, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich reportedly had offered an £11 million package in order to lure the manager to Stamford Bridge, according to The Sun. Sadly for Roman and indeed Chelsea fans who are now panicking about being lumbered with Rafael Benitez, he declined.
Chelsea may not have been for him but Pep decided it was time to do something more notable with his year off than snub Cristiano Ronaldo’s hand shake at the Ballon d’Or and has found himself a new club. The lucky club are German giants Bayern Munich who Pep has penned a three-year deal with.
For around 8 million euros a season, Pep will take the helm at the club in the summer and has already begun planning life in the Bundesliga. In a final stab in the hearts of Real Madrid fans, Pep is even attempting to lure Los Blancos legend Raul as his second in command due to the former striker’s knowledge of the league after his time at Schalke, according to the Independent.
