The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned at the prospect of Antonio Conte leaving the club…
The Italian has had a tough summer, and as uncertainty reigns over the future of Diego Costa, it doesn’t look likely that it will get any easier any time soon.
On the field problems have been piling up too, with Chelsea struggling against both Arsenal and Burnley – with both games ending in a loss to start the season.
According to the Times, though, Conte’s issues at Stamford Bridge go even further – with the publication reporting that the Italian is at loggerheads with his club over who he wants to sign this summer. Matt Hughes of the Times writes that Conte wants to build a side that can win this season, and is focused entirely on that, whilst the Chelsea brass is keen to build for the future.
In recent years, Chelsea have placed a focus upon signing young players – the Eden Hazards, Antonio Rudigers and Tiemoue Bakayokos of the world – but this is something that Conte wants to change slightly.
He would rather, seemingly, sign 28 or 29-year-old veterans that can do a job straight away.
You can certainly understand Conte’s point of view, given the short shelf life of Chelsea’s managers as of late. Preparing for the future means very little when you aren’t going to be around to enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Perhaps more concerning for the fans in the Transfer Tavern, though, is the prospect that Conte is already preparing to leave the club, with a lack of focus on the future implying that he is not expecting to be around to see it.
Either way, clearly there is a difference in philosophy between the manager and the board – and this is something that must be resolved as soon as possible.
