Real Madrid to replace Xabi Alonso with Italian enforcer?

It was just last Friday that we in the Football Transfer Tavern were mulling over the transfer of Daniele De Rossi to long standing admirers Manchester City, however the Examiner report that Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed certain competition for his signature in the form of Real Madrid.

In a move that has caused the tequila to be cracked open for our City fans, it seems Jose Mourinho may have his eye on the Roma man as cover in the centre of his midfield – especially given the contract extension talks with current enforcer Xabi Alonso are stalling significantly.

Paris Saint Germain are amongst a host of clubs who have been linked with the player who is tied to a long-term contract at his boyhood club, but the lure of the Spanish capital and Real Madrid may prove too much for even a loyal player like De Rossi to resist – not to mention the Champions League knockout stages City are unable to offer.

Real Madrid have struggled in La Liga this season and Mourinho could well see De Rossi as a player to shake the squad up and with Florentino Perez stating that Mourinho will be his coach until ‘at least 2016’ it seems money is no object for the side chasing their holy grail of ‘La Decima.’

Could De Rossi lead the Spanish champions to glory in Europe? Vote in our polls below.
