Redknapp Lines Up £12.5M German

It is fair to say that Serdar Tasci is not a household name, nor is it one that the majority of English football fans are aware of. However, in Europe, this player is becoming one of the most sought-after commodities on the market. The 6ft 1in defender was the stand-out performer in an otherwise abject season for VfB Stuttgart as he cemented his place in the German national team.

After finishing 16th in the Bundesliga this season, Stuttgart are bracing themselves for Tasci’s exit, having clearly not satisfied the growing ambitions of the young international. As per usual with any player who makes a name for himself in Germany, Tasci has been linked with Bayern Munich, but all seems cold on that front. Now it seems that the defender has caught the roving eye of Tottenham’s Harry Redknapp, who seems all set to offer £12.5m.

This seems like an inflated fee for a player most people haven’t heard of. However, such is the nature of transfer speculation about him, it may even work out as a relative bargain. Italian giants Juventus have been twiddling their thumbs for a months whilst mulling over a move for Tasci. Unprepared however to offer so much money, nothing has come to fruition, much to the frustration of fans in Turin who are keen to see the German’s arrival.

Palermo and Napoli have also been linked to the star who seemed destined for Serie A until Tottenham’s apparent interest. The move represents a bold one for Redknapp and may be the catalyst for a major shake-up at White Hart Lane. Not content with the Europa League, Redknapp and all Spurs are hoping to push on and reach the next level. It is believed that Tasci’s signing will signal the start of this.

It does seem like a strange choice for Redknapp. Last year, it was perhaps Tottenham’s central defence that performed the best. William Gallas and Michael Dawson played key roles in another successful season for Tottenham, not to mention the club have Ledley King, Younes Kaboul, Sebastian Bassong and Jonathan Woodgate in reserve. But one thing people cannot dispute is that Redknapp has a very clear understanding of talent, and what is more, often an eye for a bargain.
