As January looms large and the transfer window opens, there is also the small matter of the African Cup of Nations. A number of Premier League players will be heading to Angola including Chelsea’s Ivorian duo Saloman Kalou and Didier Drogba. This has means the Blues will be rather threadbare in the striking department prompting Carlo Ancelotti into the transfer market. One player he has identified and seems intent on bringing to Stamford Bridge is Giampoalo Pazzini of Sampdoria.
It is reported in the Italian press that Chelsea have opened up talks with Pazzini’s agent Tulio Tinti, who is also due to fly to London to push through negotiations.
Ancelotti is a known admirer of Pazzini, earlier in the season he commented on the Italian international’s ability, stating, “It is for sure that Pazzini has some excellent characteristics, and is of the highest quality.” But also denying he is ready to make an approach.
Pazzini has been in superb form for Sampdoria since he joined from Fiorentina last January. He netted 11 goals in 18 games and forged a telepathic partnership with Antonio Cassano. This season he has been almost as prolific with 8 goals in 16 starts.
Blessed with a fantastic eye for goal he is quick, strong and has typical Italian technique. You may also remember him for scoring a hat-trick for Italy U21 in the first game at the new Wembley Stadium.
No doubt a great striker and Sampdoria, despite their fantastic season so far, don’t look likely to offer the Italian, Champions League football anytime soon. It must also be noted he will be eligible for the Champions League second round, so a move will look even more likely to happen.
