Having steered Sheffield Wednesday to a 12th place finish in the Championship earlier this month, Steve Bruce will be hoping that he can launch a sustained bid for promotion next season.
Yet in order to achieve this goal, the 58-year-old must get his recruitment spot on this summer as if he doesn’t, it could lead to disaster.
Whereas bringing in several quality additions will undoubtedly benefit his club’s chances of securing a return to the Premier League in 2020, by making mistakes in the transfer window Bruce could be setting himself up for failure.
Although the Owls need to improve their squad in a number of positions, their first priority should be to focus on bringing in a new central midfielder.
With the likes of Sam Hutchinson and Joey Pelupessy suffering from a lack of consistency during the 2018/19 campaign, Wednesday could secure an upgrade if they swoop for Will Vaulks.
According to TEAMTalk, the Owls are reportedly one of several clubs thought to be interested in the Rotherham midfielder who could be available on a cut-price fee following his club’s relegation to the third tier.
An outstanding player, the £675k-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) enjoyed a fine individual campaign for the Millers in which he demonstrated all the qualities needed to thrive in the Championship.
Although he was powerless to stop Rotherham from going down, the fact that he was directly involved in 14 goals for Paul Warne’s side suggests that he would be a coup for any second-tier side.
Whereas the Millers will be doing everything they possibly can to convince the Wales international to stay at the New York Stadium over the coming months, the drop down in level to League One may not appeal to him.
Therefore, with Vaulks’ future unclear, it is imperative that Wednesday try their hardest to lure him to Hillsborough as he could prove to be the missing piece in Bruce’s jigsaw.
