There are reports flooding the Transfer Tavern today that have got the Southampton faithful sinking their pints and singing songs! Will this move set the Saints marching once again?
Asier Illarramendi, once dubbed as the new Xabi Alonso, has been linked with numerous moves away from Real Madrid, with Tottenham and Liverpool amongst the main Premier League clubs considering a bid.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Southampton have emerged as a possible late entry in the deal – a move that seems sensible following the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin and the ongoing saga around Victor Wanyama’s future.
The move would undoubtedly be a sensible one for Southampton, providing they can raise the funds needed for the deal – with the Daily Mail reporting that Real Sociedad, another of the interested parties, are themselves struggling to raise the £15m transfer fee as well as the £2.5m salary for the player.
Should Southampton be able to raise the funds to make a serious offer – something that may not be out of their reach should Wanyama move away from St Marys – Illarramendi would surely cause a lot of excitement around the terraces of Southampton.
A player of Champions League and International pedigree, the Saints faithful will be licking their lips at the possibility of this deal going through, and the Southampton fans enjoying a pint here in the Tavern are very, very excited to say the least!
