Spanish Media Suggesting Casillas Premiership Move

Surely the most unbelievable transfer rumour of recent years has to be the one coming from the Spanish media at the moment,  that Ilker Casillas is poised for a move to Manchester City.

The 31 year old Spanish international and Real Madrid goalkeeper and captain is apparently looking to leave the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer because of a bad relationship with Madrid manager Jose Mourinho reports Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

Journalist Jordi Llambias goes to great lengths validate the rumour by claiming that Manchester City have already spoken to Casillas and he has in-turn postponed his wedding to sports journalist girlfriend Sara Carbonero which was originally scheduled for July.

Llambias continues to say that Manchester City are looking to make a big name, big money signing this summer and are willing to break the transfer record for a goalkeeper in order to bring Casillas to the Etihad.

Casillas has spent his entire career at Real Madrid, starting in the junior squad of Madrids youth system during the 1990/91 season.  Since moving up to the senior team he has become one of the best goalkeepers in the world, being one of the very select group of players to have won all major club and national championship titles.

The factor that really dispels this rumour for me is not the fact that Casillas is 31 years old, Madrid captain and has spent his entire career at Real, but the fact that City already have Joe Hart between the sticks.  Hart is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and has probably been one of the safest pair of hands in the Premiership this season.  The position of keeper is the last area Mancini should need to worry about making improvements in.

This rumour mirrors a similar rumour doing the rounds in the UK regarding Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.  They both seem to have been engineered by the media to unsettle the football clubs the keepers’ currently play for.  Mundo Deportivo is a Catalalonia based newspaper so they are probably trying to cause unrest at Real. The majority of Krul rumours appeared in London based media who seem to be undermining North East based Newcastle United.

Coincidence or conspiracy?
