Tottenham are facing stiff competition for the signature of FC Basel starlet Xherdan Shaqiri from a number of Italian sides tracking his progress including Lazio, Palermo, Fiorentina and Roma according to several Italian sources.
And now Spurs are hoping to land the €8million rated the star of under-21 championship, taking Switzerland to the finals, only losing out to an excellent Spanish side.
Making his debut for Basel in 2009, Shaqiri has gone on to make 61 appearances for the Swiss side and has been key to them winning the Swiss Super League two years on the bounce.
His rasping drive past Joe Hart against England in the Euro 2012 qualifiers alerted many of Europe’s elite to the wonderfully gifted young midfielder, regarded by many as the future of Swiss football.
19 year-old Shaqiri has been linked in the past to a number of the Europe‘s top sides during the past season. The silky youngster has a wand of a left foot and is as comfortable playing as a winger in the style of Arjen Robben, terrorising full-backs cutting inside, as he is in the traditional playmaker role directing proceedings.
Shaqiri would certainly add another dimension to Harry’s squad if not quite appearing to be the ‘big name’ signing Tottenham fans having been stewing over for this window so far.
